Chris Huber

Project Associate

Chris is a communicator and community builder that has spent the last seven years working at newspapers in South Dakota. Before starting at The Numad Group, he was the editor at the Rapid City Journal

After earning a degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead in mass communications, Chris started his career as a product photographer in Minneapolis before eventually moving to Mitchell, SD as a photojournalist for The Daily Republic newspaper. Chris grew up in the Black Hills and five years ago he was able to move back to Rapid City; taking a job with the Rapid City Journal as a photojournalist.

While at the Journal, he was named Outstanding Young Journalist in 2012 by South Dakota Newspaper Association and his work has been published in newspapers and magazines across the world including: Time Magazine, The New York Times and The Washington Post. He held multiple positions while at the Journal and in 2017 he was named editor at the Rapid City Journal — becoming the youngest person to hold that position in the newspaper’s more than 125-year history.

Chris believes that strong storytelling is rooted in visual communication and he puts an emphasis on finding connections between subjects and readers.

On any given weekend you will find Chris in the Black Hills either hiking, biking, climbing, trail running or just taking in the scenery. He will soon be a father and Chris lives in Rapid City with his wife and their chocolate labrador.
