Deidre Schmidt is the president and CEO of CommonBond Communities, the largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing in the Upper Midwest. She loves to help others understand the importance of affordable housing, and to demystify how it is produced in the United States and around the world.

CommonBond provides homes and services for nearly 12,000 people every year. The nonprofit develops, owns or manages more than 6,000 affordable rental apartments and townhomes in 56 cities throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Before arriving at CommonBond in 2014, Deidre held management positions with Brighton Development and Artspace in Minneapolis, National Equity Fund in Chicago and the Affordable Housing Institute in Boston. A well-respected lecturer on housing and urbanization at Harvard University, she also operated her own consulting firm, One Roof Global Consulting.

Deidre was a Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and a Marshall Memorial Fellow for the German Marshall Fund of the United States. She currently teaches about affordable housing finance at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, in addition to public talks across the country.
